A Battalion Masse

Want to see what 715 18th century soldiers looks like together? See below.

Flash trimmed, undercoated and ready to paint.

How they came.

What 2 packs of musketeers looks like. Each has 45 musketeers, plus 10 in the command stands. 1 pack makes up 1 unit of 2 bases (a brigade) in TOSK.

My order from H&R arrived today. 10 packs of Austrian musketeers, 1 Austrian grenadiers, 1 of Prussian grenadiers, 1 Prussian fusiliers, 1 Austrian cuirassiers (21 per pack), 1 Austrian dragoons, and 1 Austrian artillery.

The fusiliers are destined to become Saxon Rochow Fusiliers*, as well as Prussians. A base each (1/2 a unit). The musketeers will be a mixture of Hanoverian, Spanish (or maybe Bourbon Italian states?), Piedmontese and maybe something else. I haven't worked out yet. The cavalry will be either Spanish or Piedmontese. Finally, there's a pack of (6) guns and crew, yet to be prepared, which will be Anglo-German.

* Note, my first foray into the other north-east German Protestant electorate.

    1. It’s nice to get back to masses of musketeers. We have a long weekend here, so I should make some good progress. Once I decide what I want to do exactly.

  2. Great to see them massed like this Chris, which really shows the appeal of 6mm figures, as they do give the impression of big battles. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them. I'm hoping to get some painting in this bank holiday weekend too...

    1. I’m tempted to organise them in a three-rank line with officers, NCOs etc in their proper places. There are too many ensigns and mounted officers, so it might be more like 650 than 700, but it could be instructive to see a 1:1 unit.

    2. I remember a post on a Blog from a visit to a stately home or museum, where there was a display of an infantry regiment in line at 1:1 scale, which was very impressive, really giving you an idea of how long the line was when deployed. Trying to manouevre all of that in combat and trying to maintain C&C must have been pretty damned difficult!

    3. I agree. I remember a blog showing an ECW unit deployed in line. That was looong even though it was 6-8 ranks deep.

    1. Thanks Peter. It's less of a new project than mission creep.

  5. Impressive parade Chris. It would be interesting to see a 1:1 representation of a battalion. It is always something I have considered doing as a diorama using 6 or 10mm figures.

  6. The mass looks effective. Looking forward to the muster once they are all painted and based.

    1. They are a bit spread out in this because they are only one rank deep on the bases. The next post has them lined up 3 deep.
