A group of ‘patriots’ went to protect the Churchill statue outside Parliament yesterday. Thank God British culture has someone to defend it eh.

I bet he’s not a racist either.
All very confusing - some of these chaps appear to be drunk rather than politically motivated - not the police, of course. I'm also confused by Boris's reference to "racist thuggery" - while hard to fault in abstract terms, this has little to do with what's been going on - except, of course, that it does sound a little bit like a limp echo of Trump, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteBoris increasingly comes across as Winnie the Pooh, without the razor-sharp intellect.
In passing(?), I might add that the photograph I saw had the gentleman urinating next to the policeman's memorial rather than on it. This, also, is complicated - I assume that public toilets had not been opened for the occasion? If he had stood next to the front offside wheel of a horse-drawn cart, would that have been public indecency? All too much for me, I fear.
The picture in the Standard’s article shows him peeing next to the plaque not directly on it. But I feel that is still not being respectful of a monument to a policeman killed in the line of duty. Now I take your point about there not being any public loos open (and not many available in London even when they are open). But that’s besides the point really. If you have to piss in the street there are plenty more seemly places to do it than there especially when the whole (supposed) point of being there is to protect monuments. If he was that bladdered that he didn’t realise then you’ve got to question how exactly he expected he was going to protect anything.
DeleteAll rather ironic.
I don’t know if you watched the second video, but that looked like a herd of the anti-anti-racists were picking on a small group of picnickers.
Sorry Jonathan. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to keep my posts non-political, to keep it as a bit of respite from the world. I’m just too opinionated to keep my mouth shut for long.
ReplyDeleteI don’t condone any vandalism or violence on any side. If nothing else I can see some actions can be counter-productive. It’s clear that some of the people on Saturday were not there acting in a patriotic fashion and were not there because they were really motivated by public spirited intentions. I know, from messages I’ve been passed by people kind of on the fringe of the ‘patriots’ demo that they were there hoping for a punch up.
I also know from direct observation that a protest with virtually no* police presence passed off peacefully and ended in a very civilised fashion.
* I did see a couple of men who were so obviously policemen out of uniform hovering around the initial gathering. They cleared off after a while - I was keeping an eye on them, cynic that I am. 😄
