Blogger problems

For the past few days Blogger has been playing up. Specifically in the comments section. It constantly asks you to sign in to Google (even when you're already signed in). Or you have the option to post anonymous comments. What a pain!

Well the problem persists. And it’s even worse than I thought. I can comment on some blogs anonymously, but others demand I log in (despite already being logged into Goofle) but on clicking the login button I get returned to the same screen.

Ah well. At least I had a pleasant few minutes listening to Allen Hinds’ ‘Music to Clamp Cabinetry to’ over on Prometheus in Aspic, so I’m feeling mellow.

UPDATE:

OK I finally found a resolution, thanks to Jonathan and David. If you're using a Mac then the answer is as follows:

But first a HEALTH WARNING. Doing this will weaken your data privacy protections so it isn't recommended.

In Safari go to Preferences then select Privacy. In Privacy untick "Prevent cross-site tracking". This did the trick for me and allows me to make comments and replies under my Google username.

But I'm not happy about it. Why is it even necessary to allow third parties to track your browsing in order to make comments from within your Google account? It's nonsense. It all worked fine until recently. It smacks of the worst sort of commercialism. If Google want to make money out of its accounts it should be upfront and offer the facilities at a price with no strings attached.

I might go back into radio silence on the comments front, which is not nice because I like to interact with all you good people out there. Hmmm!

  1. Which browser are you using? Try confirming that “Allow cross-site tracking” is turned in.

    1. Thanks John. I’ll try that. I’m using iOS and Safari. Right now I’m using iOS and it’s even doing it with this. Never happened before.

  2. Sorry to hear that but I've noticed that the whole looks of the comments sections have changed across all the Blogs I follow. Even my own too. Maybe it's somehow linked to this? Hope you get it fixed soon.

  4. Odd - I have not noticed any issues - but when I comment, I can now see a message below stating "This site is protected by reCAPTCHA....." which has only just appeared in the last few days - S0 "they" have obviously been changing stuff again...GGRRRRR!

    1. I actually prefer the new commenting UI. I can reply and see the entire response without my work scrolling outside of the very narrow two or three line text window.

  5. Yes, they have changed something.. can't enter a comment on my PC (using Firefox) but seems ok on tablet with Android? I am guessing Google made a change, other browsers may not have caught up. So, try Chrome if on a PC..?

    1. I don’t have a PC. Just an iPhone and a Mac. Might try Firefox later.

    2. A bit of an update: On my PC with Firefox, I found I couldn't enter comments on my own blog except as 'anonymous'. It said "Comment with your Google Account if you’d like to be able to manage your comments in the future. If you comment anonymously, you won’t be able to edit or delete your comment." But it didn't show my google account as an option. There was however a 'Learn more' page which then said "Blogger uses third-party cookies so you can comment from your Google Account. If third-party cookies are disabled on your browser, you may not be able to comment on blog posts while you’re signed in. You can still comment anonymously, or with a name and URL."
So then with a bit of looking around on the security settings of the browser, and I found the following "If a site seems broken, try turning off Enhanced Tracking Protection. It allows trackers to load on that site only. Enhanced Tracking Protection will continue to block trackers on other sites". so I tried switching off that tracking on my blogger page, and it now allows me to comment as normal - fingers crossed. I wonder if you might find some some similar settings on your devices?

    1. Still not settled down for me yet. From within the blog it still marks me as anonymous.

  7. Yes I noticed changes too, it wouldn't allow Jonathan to comment!

  8. It seems to be related to the browser being used or perhaps the Operating System. If I comment from my PC using Edge (with the Norton extension) I have no problems. If I comment from my iPhone using iOS and Safari comments come up as anonymous or I can't comment at all.
