The New Malden Women's Institute Re-enactment of the Second Battle of El Alamein.
The first battery opens up |
The horizon is ablaze. "Cor blimey Sarge, it almost makes ya feel sorry fer Rommel" |
Even the olives are on fire |
Crump, Crump Crump! |
One can almost hear the skirling of the pipes as the Highland Division advances (a.k.a Christchurch Young Women's Association) |
I must say the tracer effect is rather good |
As seen by JMW Turner |
Was this an hallucination?

ReplyDeleteMy grandfather told me the simplest way to imagine the 'feel' of such a bombardment (and he was there), is to put your thumbs over your ears to block them and quickly drum with your fingers on top of your head. Seems to work - in conjunction with your photos :)

From the New Malden Gazette: "The recent WI re-enactment of El Alamein, whilst spectacular, has drawn mixed reviews from residents. In particular, the Chairwoman, Mrs Hinge-Bracket, appears to have interpreted the memo to 'do a full Monty' in ways the late Fieldmarshall would not have approved. A resident, Mrs Trellis of Acacia Avenue told this reporter, 'well it got my Bert all in a flap; he didn't know where to look with all those flashes. And when they started banging, it really upset my little Cockapoo Stanley......"
