This post is as much for my benefit, in terms of keeping a record of progress, than anything else. After work I delved into a couple of items on the list.
I started to organise my Greek cavalry and light troops into units, partly to work out if I had enough bases (it looks like I'll need more). There looks to be a lot of light infantry (I have no idea of proportions historically, so maybe that's something else I need to consider). Gut reaction is I don't need so many. So I'll probably just base a few units. That'll relieve a bit of pressure on bases - I don't want to make a new order without working out if I need anything else at the same time.
Another conclusion I came to was that I don't need any more storage boxes, so that one is ticked off, at least until I get to number 20 on the list. Also, I have enough 'magnetic paper' and magnets. All to be qualified by the catch-all phrase 'for now'.
One other by-product of the look at the light troops is that I discovered several of them had helmets, round shields and pointy sticks. So I pinched several of them to pad out the 6th/8th unit of hoplites (depending on rules). Now the pointy sticks are a bit short for hoplites' dories/dorata, but I think I have some fuse wire somewhere. The shields are also a bit small for aspides, but at this scale and in the rear ranks.....
Pending the arrival of the order placed with H&R last month I'll hold off on #6, 11 and painting the 'Ottomans' and press on with 7. Maybe I can have a bash at 9 at the weekend.

ReplyDeleteWe were talking about this sort of thing at the show, re: the 3' rule and when on the table, as you really can't spot painting errors if slightly incorrect troops. I've used late 19thC Afghans for my 18thC Indian forces which are armed with Lee Metford rifles, but you can't tell even a foot or too away. Heresy for some I know, but in your case when in the back row, know one will know, other than you of course!
My main criteria (criterium?) is “have they got the right sort of hats. This works for most periods. To this, for ancients, I add the question have they got roughly the right shields. Both boxes ticked. Now to find the fuse wire for the longer pointy sticks.

When you said you had too many light infantry and remembering your additional hopolite needs ,I wondered how long before the two merged, seems like a sound idea to me!

DeleteMy head of sixth form wrote in my report that I had “a cavalier attitude to punctuality and dress”. Not once did I flounce in at 9:45 in a floppy hat with feathers in it. Although New Romantics was a thing. Sartorially I was more of a Roundhead. A half-arsed one mind. More Essex than Cromwell.
