Delays, walks and mags

Bit of a mixed post this. The Po Valley Campaign has been delayed owing to busy-ness. I'll get round to it no doubt, but first I have an on-line game tomorrow with the Three Daves hosted by Jonathan Freitag.

Part of the delay was caused by going to the Grimsby games at Gillingham the previous Saturday (W 4-1), Cambridge on Tuesday (W 2-1) and watching on the Saturday on the tellybox just gone (a very satisfying 4-0 win over Swindon to secure a play-off spot with a game to spare). Whether we are ultimately successful in the playoffs remains to be seen, but we're making progress year by year so I'm philosophical about it. Tuesday's game was the most satisfying, probably because it was a much tougher game, with more jeopardy right to the end. It finished with a late, late winner which produced such a release of emotion that I think I'm now engaged to five different people I've never met before.

After the match on Saturday I entertained the Margravina with the rare treat of a walk during normal football time (our game was an early kick off). The M decided we should go to the Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park to see the Azaleas(?). Word must have gone out on the Facebooks because the World and his wife were there. People were queuing up to take photos, selfies and group pics in front of a particularly popular spot. Here's a few of mine.

Then Sunday we did a circuit on Wimbledon Common. Here's a few pics starting with a snap of the Beverley Brook with swarms of flies indicating how warm it has been lately.

The great thing about walking in new places is you make discoveries like this.

This plaque is on the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club's course. I assume some of the residual earthworks form part of the 'landscaping' for the course.

Eartheworks? close to the plaque

Lastly, thanks to a post by Bob Cordery of Wargaming Miscellany, I ordered a couple of back issues of a Spanish military history magazine. They arrived this morning. That should keep me going for months while I painstakingly translate the articles. Or I could just use the photo app on a translation tool, but where's the fun and learning in that?

  1. Good weekend for us Blackburn Rovers Supporters we avoided relegation with a game to spare. Sad to see Leicester relegated though it was almost a case of two ex-Premier League Champions dropping to the third tier. Looking forward to tomorrow's dust up.

    1. Bet that was a relief. It would have been amazing to have two ex-Prem champions go down to the third tier, at all let alone at the same time.
Blackburn are rumoured to be in for our striker, Jaze Kabia. It's only his first season in the Football League - last season he was at National League South level. Not sure he's ready for Championship football yet. My advice would be to pay lots of money for him and loan him back to Grimsby for a season to get more experience.

  2. When you make your way through the translations, please share your findings. War of Polish Succession...good! Nice cover artwork too!

    Looking forward to Tuesday's battle.

    1. I will. The artwork is great isn't it. The cover is a section of a bigger picture inside. There's lots of other similar work and maps inside.

  3. Real life has a lot to answer for, Chris! Only a few years to retirement.
Those magazines look interesting; shame they don't do an English version.

    1. Same here regarding the R word.
It's not too bad translating, even without much Spanish. Most of the military words are familiar due to French being the dominant language in the period. Obviously the nuances are hard to get though.

    1. Yes, nice weather last weekend. As for Town, a definite improvement on results and performance this season on the last, which was an improvement on the year before.

    1. For me, being in exile, I have to grab the football watching experiences when I can. We're lucky with lots of history on the doorstep.

  6. Enjoyable post . I liked the botanical and historical photos very much indeed. Excellent reading material. I wish the UK published a similar magazine in terms of quality of maps and illustration.

    1. Glad you enjoyed them Alan. There's a gap in the UK market I guess for something similar.

  7. Well Grimsby seem to still be in the fight Chris and which Cambridge team did you play; City or United? I vaguely remember the latter going from the 4th to the 1st Division in 3 (4?) years and straight back down again, most likely in the late 1970's. Azaleas leave me cold, but the intesity of the blue of the sky at the weekend was just wonderful. Nice bit of history on Wimbledon Common too.

    1. It was United. City haven't been in the FL (yet?). We have played Histon a couple of times when they got to the National League 13/14 years ago.
Camb Utd went from what was the 4th to the 2nd in 2 years in the early 90s and nearly made it up to the 1st. Grimsby, Southend and Cambridge all had successive promotions in the same seasons. Since then we all eventually ended up in the National League (5th tier) at overlapping times and Cambridge have been back up to the 3rd tier and back down.
