End of Season / Drawing Progress

Saturday afternoons are now free for the next three months. Grimsby got knocked out of the playoffs on Friday night. We went out in a slightly disappointing way but the club has made progress over the last 12 months. 78 points versus 68 points last season and we reached the 4th round of both major cup competitions. Along the way we've had some great times, including THAT win at the end of August. A night that will live with me for the rest of my life. I'm sure my son will also be boring future generations with the tale long after I'm gone!

Just before kick off on That Night.

My mood was not helped on Saturday by Celtic beating Hearts in the last game of the season to take the SPL title. Not because I have any particular feeling for the Jam Tarts, but because, in common with many fans, I want to see the Old Firm stranglehold loosened. I have a feeling though that Hearts will be competitive again in the coming seasons and punch above their weight.

Happier memory.

So what of the drawing? Well I managed to grab some time between work and dinner to experiment a bit and I think now to actually make a proper start. The amount of good quality light in the early evening, despite the weather not being great, is a real help.

After dabbling around with slightly different dimensions I settled back on the original ones from my first version last week. With a minor tweak. The first job was to plot the overall shape of the fortress. I went for a 'decagon' with elongated sides. The shape joined up the apexes of what will become 12 bastions.

Getting the basic shape down. The points with circles will be the apexes of the bastions and the 10 sided shape will therefore represent the outside points of the enceinte. Beyond that there will be a ditch, possibly with ravelins and then the glacis.

Drawing in the bastions in accordance with the guidelines shown in Fire and Stone. The slight tweak mentioned above is that with the corner bastions I adjusted the re-entrant angle between the flank and the curtain wall so that it is less acute. This means the bastion gorge is wider than t would have been. Overall dimensions are 30 cm by 20cm. 2cm = 100 yards.

Once I've drawn the rest of the bastions I'll add in some gates. One main one and a couple of smaller ones. Then add the ravelins - at least to cover the gates. I think that will require more trial and error. On the finished model, I will also have detachable parts so I can split the walls and have a river.

As the overall scale is pretty true to the ground scale of the tactical rules, there isn't space for my normal base sizes along the walls and in the covered way. For that I plan to use guns and infantry figures from my spares box. I might even have a bash at making some guns on fortress carriages (the ones a bit like ships' gun carriages).

Post Script
I finished off the bastions and main walls, adding in ravelins where I want to place the main gates. As luck would have it, two railway tunnel entrances that I bought a few years ago are almost exactly the same width as the space between bastions on the long sides of the fortress. Also, I worked out roughly where I want the glacis to start and finish. The key question in my mind now is whether to place ravelins all the way round. At this scale they are quite small, so they will be fiddly to model. Once I've decided on that I can draw in the covered way.

  1. Shame Grimsby got knocked out, but they did have another memorable season. Onwards and upwards and all that! Oh and I agree about breaking the Old Firm dominance. The weather makes it hard to believe we are in mid-May and the Chelsea Flower Show is on, as it doesn't feel like it at all. On the brighter evenings give any hints! The drawings are looking good and await more updates on the construction in due course:).

    1. Updates on the fortress will in due course Steve. Will probably not be before the weekend as I’m in the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (don’t ask about the acronym!) so not able to make early starts in the evening.

  2. I’m not really a football fan, but I did purchase a secondhand star fort at Partizan it needs a bit of renovation but hopefully we may see it out in the future

    1. When I first read that Matt, I thought you were referring to Belgrade’s main football clubs (Red) Star and Partizan. 😁
You’ll have to do a show and tell on your fort!

  3. Chris, I don't envy you getting the angles right on the walls and bastions (hence the suggestion of commercial models). In other news, the book is making its way to you via David - no rush for return.

    1. Thanks for finding and bothering to drag the book all the way to Newark. I'll be sure to meet up with David at some point. You're a gent.
Funnily enough, I've got more confidence of getting the angles 'right' if I make my own than on a commercially available model. Commercial models tend to be designed as a regular hexagon or something like that. If you gave a different set-up the angles don't work, assuming they were right in the first place. Having said that, I am cack-handed, so what starts as OK on paper could end up skew-whiff.

  4. Ar least you were at the right end of the table, I was of course rooting for you as I continue to get updates! Hoping Bolton beat Stockport, so that with a bit of luck it can be 1977 all over again with Spurs v Bolton in what was the second division! Good progress on your fort, havent seen Red Star Belgrade but did see Hjdak Split beat Dinamo Zagreb in Split that was great fun!

    1. Yes, indeed. No complaints here Iain. I bet the Hajduk-Zagreb game had a lively atmosphere. The odds are surely on Spurs to stay up now.

  5. Those drawings are looking really good Chris. You have already exchanged notes with Tony, so can gain from his trials (and he'd probably say tribulations, but I haven't seen evidence of that!).
    Best wishes, James

  6. As one with a longtime affection for HMFC and a growing interest in Dunfermline FC it has been quite a few days. I have taken a liking for listening to football on the radio which seems , to me, an enjoyable and convenient way of consuming the product and learning more about the background to clubs etc. I listened in to Bournemouth v Man City last night for example and learned more of the Southampton affair! My interest is growing.
I too wish you well with angles and the arcane.

    1. I probably 'consume' more games through the radio than I do seeing them (either in the flesh or TV). There's an extra edge to it with that slight pause before you know what has happened.
Thanks for the wishes on the fortress making.

  7. At least you are not a Southampton supporter Chris - LOL.
I do support Celtic in a kind of halfhearted (no pun intended!) way - but how that game ended and the trouble in the city afterwards makes me wish the SFA would do the same to them - disqualify them and award the win to Hearts - mind you, I don't suppose the citizens of Glasgow or Police Scotland would welcome the outcome of that happening!

    1. That was an expensive mistake to make wasn't it! Not going to comment on the trouble in Glasgow. I don't know much about it and, more importantly, I'm a coward.

  8. I have to admire your patience and precision on your drawings.

    1. Maybe patience but there’s not much precision!
