Campaign Delay / Reading Matters

Despite my best intentions (paving the way to Hell) I didn’t start the Po valley campaign whilst the Margravina was away visiting her ancestral lands. By the Friday I needed a bit of downtime after a busy week. Saturday was taken up with a trek to Cheltenham to see the Mighty Mariners extend their winning streak, and then Tuesday evening saw a similar trip to Colchester with a similar outcome. Both tiring trips by car. Especially the first one as it involved driving back across country in the dark, through narrow, pot-holed lanes, and a long tailback when traffic heading eastwards met a lorry coming the other way with no room to pass.

I fleshed the campaign map out. Still have a few towns to name.

I haven’t been totally inactive on the hobby front though. Santa bought me a few books and I’ve gradually been working my way through them.

Been thinking about getting this for a while. Currently onto the last couple of chapters. Bit of myth busting in it.

Contents for the above.

This was enjoyable. Almost tempted me into a campaign

Couple of booklet sized publications in the waiting pile.

Last but not least, I bought myself this when I discovered the disappearance of an Italian website that had much of this information, and more.

Some of the militia units look interesting, and were pretty effective in some cases. If you fancy a walk on the wild side of the 18th century, some small wars action in the Alps could be engaging.

Lots of lovely plates like this.

    1. Sometimes following Grimsby Town doesn’t feel like real life. It’s like a parallel universe.
No hurry on the book. But thanks.

  2. A lot of great looking titles in this lates batch of reading materials. Burns and Wilson are books I would like to see. As for your missing website, what is really strange is that I can still pull it up on my IOS devices but not in a Windows browser. Very weird!

    1. That is weird. It works on iOS for me too.
The Burns book is good if a bit ‘stitched together’ (I.e. some previously published articles). Well worth reading. The Wilson is a very good resource.

  5. Nice bunch of books mate, I’m sure the campaign can wait a bit, think of it as marinating for a while in a sauce of new ideas. Gosh I’m hungry now.

  6. 'Work is the curse of the gaming classes'! The joy of our hobby is that you can always find a way to 'take part' no matter what the World throws at you:). Some good books there and they are my fall back for when motivation or time is lacking for anything else.

  7. As it's a hobby and to be enjoyed, no pressure if things don't always go to plan Chris, I am sure you will get to the campaign at some point! Some nice-looking books there.

    1. Yeah. Not stressing about it. Had a couple of pleasant footie trips in a few days, with the right results, and managed to get a ticket for the Cup match v Wolves. So what’s not to like?

    1. Google is like that. Sends you all sorts of stuff once you have clicked on something vaguely related. Yep. On a good run, but need to in order to catch up with the promotion pack.
Maldini Kacurri. It seems odd that WE are BUYING player off Arsenal! Obviously not £millions. Hopefully he’ll live up to his first name.

  11. Gee Chris, I'd say that you have been busy on the wargaming front. The map is looking great, two books read and others on the go. It generally takes me a month or so to read a book as I only read a bit at a time around doing other things. Added to that I am generally taking copious notes and listing relevant page numbers. with quotes or bits.
PLUS if you drove to watch the matches the celebratory drinks had to wait until you got home!!
    Best wishes, James

    1. No wonder it takes you so long to read if you’re taking notes James! I admire your scholarly approach.
No celebratory drinks were taken, even after getting home.

  12. the map looks great, I look forward to the campaign progress reports - but take your time, no pressure! Colchester eh, not far from chez moi, though I try to avoid Essex :)
I promise myself I will get to the Alex Burnes book eventually, looks well worth a read, looks like it emphasises 'lived experience' of the troops?
    Happy campaigning!

    1. Hi David. Colchester is never a favourite place to go midweek. The ground is way out of town and a long schlep to the station to get the train back to London. Hence driving.
There is a bit about the lived experience. To emphasise the agency of the rank and file and the fact they tended not to do the daft things that they were supposed to do in battle.
